Ebook About A language barrier is no match for love. Lauren Collins discovered this firsthand when, in her early thirties, she moved to London and fell for a Frenchman named Olivier—a surprising turn of events for someone who didn’t have a passport until she was in college. But what does it mean to love someone in a second language? Collins wonders, as her relationship with Olivier continues to grow entirely in English. Are there things she doesn’t understand about Olivier, having never spoken to him in his native tongue? Does “I love you” even mean the same thing as “je t’aime”? When the couple, newly married, relocates to Francophone Geneva, Collins—fearful of one day becoming "a Borat of a mother" who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer her questions for herself by learning French. When in French is a laugh-out-loud funny and surprising memoir about the lengths we go to for love, as well as an exploration across culture and history into how we learn languages—and what they say about who we are. Collins grapples with the complexities of the French language, enduring excruciating role-playing games with her classmates at a Swiss language school and accidently telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine. In learning French, Collins must wrestle with the very nature of French identity and society—which, it turns out, is a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language, Collins describes with great style and wicked humor the frustrations, embarrassments, surprises, and, finally, joys of learning—and living in—French.Book When in French: Love in a Second Language Review :
When in French by Lauren Collins has charm, wit, and some laugh-out-loud moments as she tries to negotiate a bilingual relationship without speaking French (in the beginning) and gradually becomes more fluent with lots of confusions and comedic relief along the way. She also instructs us with long treatises about language/culture/linguistics. The operative word here is LONG treatises. What could have been a charming rendition on how fluency is achieved in another language instead becomes clunky and overwrought. A better writer (or a good editor) would have trimmed and pruned to make this information blend more seamlessly into her narrative. Then we would have been spared from such sentences as “a rose is only a rose, and marijuana is only marijuana, in a linguistically prelapsarian world, when the properties of a thing and its name are perfectly equivalent.” Or “The word bellend was the most efficient synecdoche I’d ever heard.” Or “If translation is a catalyst, the B that turns A to C, sometimes it seems to work in reverse. After translation, C does not revert to A, but rather into A+ (or A-), an entity that has been permanently altered by the translation.” If you can cherry-pick what interests you, you may enjoy the book. I think she should go back to the drawing board and re-write it. It could be a much better book. I took 2 years fo French in high school with the idea that someday I would spend time in France. Here I am at 70, a few visits, no real quality time there. This book sounded like a person who understood this. Not a chance. She sounds like a severely ADHD person that had an idea, but couldn't stay on topic. The first chapter says language is weird. The second chapter says that living in a place where you don't speak the language is awkward. I lived in Thailand, Spain, Italy, and England (if you don't believe that English is a foreign language, you haven't lived in England). It never gets better. I rarely have to look up words, she sent me off to the dictionary twice. The first time it was a phrase that should have been in plain English, actually less effective for the pretentiousness. The second was probably an incorrect usage, But an obscure enough word that I will never know. I would not recommend this book, even though it's a topic that should have been interesting. The sad part is she finished the book as a hook into what she obviously expected to be book 2 of a series. Sorry.
